Our Education Program

We launched our education program in partnership with community gardens and local organizations across Chicago’s South and West sides. Through interactive food demonstrations, we show the importance of healthy eating and empower individuals and families to make informed nutritional choices. By exploring a variety of nutritious foods, community members gain the tools and inspiration to improve their overall health and well-being.

2013

Interactive Food Demonstrations

By 2013, we had successfully organized and executed over 20 food demonstrations in collaboration with various health and wellness organizations, including the esteemed University of Chicago. These demonstrations aimed to educate participants about nutrition, cooking techniques, and healthy eating habits, showcasing a variety of recipes and ingredients.

Community Partnerships for Food Access

We partner with local farmers’ markets and food access organizations to strengthen our efforts in addressing food insecurity. Through workshops, training sessions, and hands-on demonstrations, we provide community members with the knowledge and skills to make informed food choices. Participants learn how to prepare nutritious meals and make the most of fresh, local produce, empowering them to lead healthier lives.

Connecting Communities to Local Food

We advanced our mission by creating a platform that links communities facing food insecurity with local farmers, community gardens, and retailers. By fostering these connections, we work to improve access to nutritious food, support local agriculture, and collaborate toward a healthier future for all.

Engaging Students Through Food Education

In 2018, we partnered with schools and educational organizations to bring interactive food demonstrations and nutrition education to students in grades 6–12. Our hands-on programs teach students about healthy eating, nutrition, and cooking techniques, while encouraging them to explore new foods and culinary skills. Through active participation in workshops and demonstrations, students gain a deeper understanding of the value of nutritious meals and the joy of cooking. By engaging students directly in the learning process, we aim to inspire healthier choices and foster a lifelong appreciation for good food.

2024

Strengthening Food Access

We continue to bring hands-on food demonstrations, nutrition education, and training to communities across Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. By partnering with local farmers’ markets, community gardens, and food organizations, we empower individuals and families to make informed food choices, build cooking skills, and connect with fresh, nutritious produce—fostering healthier, stronger communities.

Establishing Food United, NFP

As our work expanded, we founded Food United, NFP to serve as a hub for organizations dedicated to improving food access, advancing urban agriculture, and supporting community health. By providing education, resources, and hands-on training, we help these organizations strengthen their programs, reach their communities more effectively, and amplify the impact of their initiatives. Together, we are building a network of empowered organizations working toward healthier, more resilient communities.

Looking Ahead

As Food United continues to grow, we are focused on expanding the reach and impact of our food education, culinary demonstrations, and community activation efforts. We look forward to building stronger partnerships, creating more opportunities for hands-on learning, and bringing practical nutrition resources to more individuals and families.

Our future is centered on creating accessible, engaging experiences that empower people with the skills and confidence to make healthier food choices. Through innovative programming, community collaboration, and meaningful connections, we will continue to strengthen local food systems, inspire healthier lifestyles, and cultivate communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Together, we are building a future where food is more than nourishment—it is a pathway to education, connection, wellness, and lasting community impact.
